Common Tax Return Questions

New Zealand has tax brackets based on the annual amount of income you receive, which are:

  • $0 - $14,000 = 10.5%
  • $14,001 - $48,000 = 17.5%
  • $48,001 - $70,000 = 30%
  • Over $70,000 = 33%

Working out your tax to pay can be tricky, as you only have to pay the higher rate for the income greater than the tax bracket. For example – If you earned $20,000 then you'd pay 10.5% of the first $14,000 and 17.5% of the remaining $6,000, meaning your effective tax rate is slightly lower than you may assume.

Most people aren't required to file an Individual Tax Return (IR3), as their income is paid as "Pay as You Earn" (PAYE) and the tax is automatically paid on your behalf to IRD by your employer.

If you're working for yourself, or receiving income without tax being paid, then you're required to disclose your income details and pay your income tax yourself. This is done by filing an IR3.

We have a specialist team standing by to assist, calculate, and file our customer's tax returns.

If you've been overseas for less than 325 days and earned income then you're required to file an Individual Tax Return (IR3) to declare your overseas earnings.

This is because you're a New Zealand tax resident during this time. You'll usually get a tax credit from the overseas country that you were in, or paid from, if you have already paid tax on your income over there. New Zealand has a 'double tax agreement' with over 30 countries.

We have set-price packages for our tax return service, ranging from $100 for customers with simple tax returns with expenses to claim, to $350 for more complicated tax returns involving rental properties. Our Standard and Rental packages have affordable add-ons, which enable customers to tailor the package to suit their specific needs.

A full breakdown of our fees and additional charges are available on our pricing page.

If you've moved to New Zealand during the last tax year then you're not required to file a tax return if you've been earning regular salary or wages. However, if you would like to apply to claim a tax refund then you'll need to complete a non-mandatory Individual Tax Return (IR3).

We recommend that all people who have moved here in the last tax year do this, as you've most probably been taxed on your income as if you were earning that amount for the entire year.

Filing your Individual Tax Return has the potential to generate a tax debt for you to pay, as you typically haven't been paying tax when you receive income. If you haven't been putting that tax aside then it can come as quite a nasty surprise at the end of the year.

If you do have a debt with IRD, then we can assist in arranging for you to repay your debt, and in some cases having the debt written off. Simply speak to us on LiveChat or send us an email to discuss your individual circumstances.

"Made it so easy. I would never of known how to do it. Thank you"
